What can you do with a business degree?

What can you do with a business degree? What kinds of jobs can you get with a business degree? The answer is shocking, yet logical.

Year after year business degrees top the list for the most popular college degrees. These are also the same students who fight for student loan forgiveness since they can’t seem to get a decent job. What’s the disconnect?

This guide you help you make an informed decision if a business degree is worth it.

What is a Business Degree?

A business degree teaches high-level theories of operations, communication, finance, marketing, management, etc. Students are lead to believe that by learning a little bit about each one of these subjects, it qualifies them to work in any one of these fields.

They are told that with a business degree they can work in:

  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Human Resources
  • Healthcare Management
  • Construction Management
  • Sports Management
  • International Business
  • International Relations
  • Marketing
  • Public Administration
  • Healthcare Administration/Management

Colleges throw out all of these cool-sounding jobs to make it seem like a business degree is the complete package. This is why colleges put words like international, sports, and healthcare in front of a business job title to make it seem even more attractive to the easily deceived student.

The truth is that someone with a business degree isn’t qualified to work in any of these jobs. A business degree wouldn’t even allow you to get your foot in the door if all you do is graduate from an average college.

What jobs can you get with a business degree?

Why is it that you can’t do any of the jobs that college led you to believe you would be qualified for if you got their coveted business degree?

The problem is that our economy is much too complex to be a jack of all trades. It requires people to specialize in different disciplines to be able to effectively do their job.

Honesty- how would spending a handful of hours taking classes on management theory qualify you to manage healthcare professionals? It’s very apparent to business professionals that a business degree doesn’t qualify students for anything, but students are easily deceived to believe whatever they’re told by the colleges.

It is true that you can do anything with a business degree, yet you are capable of nothing. You can choose a variety of low paying entry-level jobs in retail, restaurants, hospitality, and work your way up to a manager. You could also choose to learn a specialized skillset such as finance or law.

It is also true that you’re not much further ahead than a recent high school graduate who can also do anything with their diploma, yet are capable of nothing. They can choose to work a variety of low paying entry-level jobs, go in the trades, go to college, etc. The options are really endless for a high school graduate just as they are for a business graduate.

The only real difference between you and a high school graduate career-wise is that you have a piece of paper that says you’re a college graduate. A piece of paper that probably isn’t even worth as much as you would think.

Is a business degree worth it?

With all that said, is it worth it to pursue a business degree? It really depends on what you want out of your degree.

If you want to get a business degree so you can get a good business job, then do not get a business degree! It is absolutely not worth it. You would be much better off going to college to acquire a very specialized skillset that the government regulates to require college.

If the career isn’t regulated such as careers in programming, design, analytics, marketing, sales, etc, then you would be better off acquiring that specialized skillset outside of college.

If you want to get a business degree as an excuse for you to be in college and have fun, then you chose the right degree. A business degree is one of the easiest degrees allowing you to have loads of free time to have fun.
