Becoming an electrician is a strong option if you enjoy working with your hands, solving problems, and seeing the real-world impact of your work, and you can start through an apprenticeship instead of years of trade school. Pay varies with location, employer and experience. The Electrician course page shows the typical starting salary for this career.
Here’s what the typical journey looks like:
1. Start as an Apprentice Your first step is an entry-level role like Electrical Apprentice. You’ll work under a licensed electrician while gaining hands-on experience and building foundational skills. Our Electrician Course is designed as a pre-apprenticeship program that gives you a competitive edge—even if you have no prior experience. You’ll learn electrical theory, circuitry, safety protocols, conduit bending, and get familiar with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
2. Progress Through Your Apprenticeship With 1–3 years of on-the-job experience, your skills and responsibilities grow steadily. You’ll move through your apprenticeship program, increase your earnings, and take on more complex work. During this time, you’ll also build your confidence working with tools, reading blueprints, troubleshooting systems, and following code.
3. Become a Journeyman Electrician After 3–4 years, you can test to become a licensed Journeyman Electrician. This role allows you to work independently, lead projects, and supervise others. Pay typically rises as you become licensed and gain experience.
Long-Term Opportunities Beyond journeyman, you can pursue roles like Foreman, Master Electrician, or even start your own business. Skilled electricians are needed for everything from homes to EV chargers and sustainable energy systems.
