Tons of Jobs. This is the most in demand sales job to date. Every company is struggling to find people with the right skills to fill their positions because colleges don’t train people in technology sales. This makes you very rare and valuable.
High Salary. Technology sales is known for being one of the best paying entry-level jobs outside of engineering. The average first-year pay is over $60,000 and there are many people making over $100,000 in the following years. It also isn’t uncommon to find top enterprise sales reps making over $500,000.
Career Path. Technology sales has one of the most diverse career paths. You can work your way up the sales ladder climbing from an Account Executive all the way to the VP of Sales and even the CEO. Salespeople have also been known to transition into all kinds of business roles such as human resources, marketing, customer success, etc. Sales is even the most popular background to set yourself up for entrepenurship.
What is Technology Sales?
The name for a technology sales rep is also a sales development rep. A successful sales development rep serves as the link between marketing and sales in a business to business company. Their job is to solely focus on generating qualified leads that are interested in the companies solution through the use of outbound calling, emailing, and social connections. The qualified leads that they generate are then passed onto a more senior salesperson called an account executive whose sole responsibility is to close the deal. This process in which the sales cycle is split into two different roles is a relatively new trend that has become the norm for many organizations.
The first job of the sales development rep is to use tools to do research and identify companies that would be an ideal fit for their solution. They then organize these companies along with their associated contacts using a customer relationship management (CRM) software program. The sales development rep then uses calls, emails, and social connections to get in contact with their target prospects. They educate their prospects with new insights into how their solution can help solve their problems. This requires the sales development rep to have a very good understanding of the industry, company solution, and their prospects’ challenges.
This career requires you to be productive throughout the entire day to generate a sufficient amount of qualified leads to meet your quota. The majority of your time will be spent in an office on the phone making calls, sending out messages through email/LinkedIn, and doing research.
