What’s it like to work in HVAC?

Updated October 25, 2026

If you like staying active, solving real-world problems, and helping people stay safe and comfortable, HVAC could be a great fit.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems are essential in homes and businesses, and HVAC professionals are the ones who keep them running. Whether you’re installing new systems or handling urgent repairs, the job is hands-on, meaningful, and needed year-round.

What does a typical day look like in HVAC?

  • 7:00 – 7:30 AM: Morning Briefing Start your day with a team meeting—either on-site (for installers) or at the office (for service technicians). You’ll go over the day’s schedule, review safety procedures, and occasionally get quick training. Service techs might also check in with clients from the previous day.
  • 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM: Service or Installation Calls Service techs head to their first appointment, where they might spend an hour or the whole day troubleshooting, making repairs, or performing system checks. Installers work with their crew to set up new systems, connect ductwork, or replace old units.

At CourseCareers, we teach you the core skills needed to land your first HVAC job—no prior experience or college degree required. You’ll also get access to job search tools, a supportive community and optional paid career coaching to help you succeed in your new career.
